A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.

The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets domestically and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the yearly new year's auction.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price soared rapidly."

This new purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record once again.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be featured at its eateries throughout the country.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the winner's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one satisfied diner.
